The Galesburg-Augusta Intermediate Schools accommodates fourth and fifth graders, and builds on the skills they attained during their K-3 education at the Primary.

The Intermediate offers extensive opportunities for students needing more of a challenge in their academic curriculum, including: Battle of the Books, Reading Counts, Science Fun Night and a Soup Kitchen. Students have access to extra-curricular activities including: Fifth Grade Camp, Lymphoma Walk-A-Thon, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra performances, swimming instruction and The Washingtons’ assembly, a group that come to the Intermediate School, performing assembly.  For students who need extra help there are the following services available: At-Risk programming and tutoring, as well as Special Education services.

A state grant has provided the Intermediate School with financial support and professional development.  The Michigan Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative, MiBLSi, is a project from Michigan Department of Education, Special Education and Early Interventions.  Additional information is available at the web site:  http://www.cenmi.org/miblisi.  The MiBLSi grant provided the opportunity for the staff to catapult into the newest of innovations in the area of positive behavior support and academic excellence.  The staff is highly trained in providing interventions in order to meet the needs of the students.  The training is focused in the areas of developmentally appropriate strategies in academic and behavior instruction.  The Intermediate School is a proud member of the MiBLSi consortium.

The Intermediate takes a team-based approach to student learning.. This team-based approach brings together classroom teachers and other school professionals.  This team works collaboratively in a problem-solving process to address the problems faced by students who struggle in school. Our goal at the Intermediate School is to improve student achievement and ensure that ALL children learn.

Some accomplishments the Intermediate School achieved during the 2006-2007 school year include:

  • The District continues to support this building with many enhancements centering on technology.

  • Fifth grader’s received a superior rating for their presentation of a simulated congressional hearing held in Lansing at the Capitol Complex.   Students  competed against teams from three other elementary schools and a middle school.

  • Mrs. Rena Heleniak was awarded the Crystal Apple Aware followed by an additional award of Michigan History Teacher of the year.

  • Students provided several opportunities for the school to give back to the local community in a variety of volunteer activities.

Visitors are always welcome at G-A Intermediate, and we encourage you to call (269) 484-2030 to talk with our school principal, Ms. Martha Hymer, mhymer@gacsnet.org or arrange a time to meet with her and visit the school.
